Gonsalves Tae Kwon Do 'Kick Out Hunger' Delivers Again!

This year in their annual Christmas Food Drive, the Gonsalves Tae Kwon Do students and instructors collected 1,565 food items totaling over 1000 lbs! These items were delivered to the St. Anthony Food Pantry in New Bedford before Christmas and they were handed out to those in need in our community. Awesome job to everyone that participated, you should be very proud of yourselves. And a special "thank you" to Master Aimee for developing and executing the idea of Kick Out Hunger!

A Good Way to Keep Busy

Fred Despres remembers that ten years ago, when he first started volunteering at the pantry, some things such as the process for picking up food in Boston and the number of persons receiving aid were very different then they are now. He also notes that some other things, such as the desire of volunteers like himself to help others, are very much the same as they have always been.

When asked about his involvement in the pantry Fred smiles and says that “it's a good way to keep busy”. Anyone who hears Fred and sees that smile knows that “keeping busy” at the pantry means driving the truck to pick up food and supplies, moving seemingly innumerable pallets of cartons, cans and produce, coordinating and encouraging the efforts of the many other volunteers, resolving issues that invariably arise in the weekly pantry routine, constantly considering the needs of others in the pantry family, welcoming pantry patrons and more.

In the enthusiasm and excitement of events such as our recent Thanksgiving turkey distribution when we are all thankful for the generous good we as a well-coordinated team have accomplished we might do well to also consider how thankful we are for Fred being with us. We also give thanks to all who donate money, food and time to help others. Bless you.
